Data Storage

Cheap Data StoragePosted February 16, 1998 My proposal is to eliminate all local disk storage and rely instead on the Internet for storing your personal files. And I don't mean a remote disk server, either. I want to use the Internet itself to store my data. I'll set up machines to simply forward packets around the net. To save a file, I simply send it to the forwarding chain. The data will be stored not in RAM nor in someones buffer, but in electron potentials hurtling around the globe in wires, through space, and in fiber optic cable. To retrieve my file I'd simply set up a flag on one of the transfer points saying that my file should be forwarded to me instead of on to the next in the machine chain. You know if we get enough people participating, we'll have access to terabytes and terabytes of storage without buying any additional hardware at all! Think of the cost savings! And you'd have instant access to your data from anywhere on the Internet, too. I'm forming the Internet Data Repository Consortium; we need some folks to help administer it and to begin hitting the virtual sidewalks to gather volunteers for relay stations. We'll work it so that if you agree to forward packets, you can use the network for storage yourself for free. Who's with me? |
