1. Isolate database calls from "mysql" functions
2. No more barewords -- well, no. even removing the barewords won't fix the "notice" complaints, which complain all the time if there's no matching key. and besides, you have to use barewords when using array elements in quoted strings, so i will be obnoxious and say that barewords are legal OUTSIDE strings too. bastards.
