Dinky Freeware Sample: Screened Bloom

Example usage of Dinky - Digital Ink and Light.

This example adds a lovely warm illumination to portraits by creating a softened and screened mask of the lighter tones in the image. Let's see how it works.

Original Image

Selecting the Highlights

New Dinky Settings

Visualise: Checked
Dark: 1
Feather: 1

These selection settings, as you can see, cause light colours to be fully selected and dark colours to be unselected, with tones inbetween to be moderately selected. (A feather value of 1 will reach from white to black and from grey to fully saturated.)

Setting Screen Mode

New Dinky Settings

Visualize: Off
Blending: Light / Screen

Screen mode adds light to the image without overexposing.

Softening the Selection

New Dinky Settings

Smooth: 1

Smooth applies a blur filter to the selection. This causes the highlights to "bloom" or expand around their current location.

Moderating the Effect / Final Image

New Dinky Settings

Fade: 0.6

At full effect, the bloom was too bright; fading it out to appx 60% dry did the trick.
